Claude Venard was a French a French post-Cubist and still life painterand was born in Burgundy in 1913. At the age of 17 he began to take evening classes in painting at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués.  However, after six years of conscientious study he was forced, in order to support himself, to spend most of 1936 working as a restorer at the Louvre Museum.  This experience, however, turned out to be beneficial in as much as it enabled the young artist to fill the gaps still existing in his artistic education.

In 1936, he was part of a group show at the Galerie Billet-Worms, which critic Waldemar George hailed as the birth of the group Forces Nouvelles. This new art movement derided the avant-garde in favor of a return to strict and traditional principles of craftsmanship. Forces Nouvellesincluded the painters Pierre Tal-Coat and André Marchand. During the next four years, this group promoted a new form of figuration, marked by the rejection of Impressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Eventually Venard would rebel against them, forging his own post-Cubist style utilizing a wide color palette applied roughly with a pallet knife, creating a visceral, “raw” strain of the geometric aesthetic. In 1939, the group officially split, but Venard continued to gain recognition during and after the war.

Venard had a successful career during his lifetime, punctuated by one-man shows in Paris, London, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dusseldorf, Munich, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Canada, Belgium and Holland.

The artist’s works are included in the permanent collections of many museums including the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

He died in Savary, France in 1999.
