Yair Garbuz is an Israeli multimedia artist who was born in Givatayim in 1945. He is also known in Israel as an author and as a humorist.
From 1962–1967, he was a member of Kibbutz Kfar Hachoresh. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces, he studied painting under Raffi Lavie, whom he considered a mentor. He also studied under Moshe Propes and Yehiel Kriza at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv.
Garbuz's early work, in the 1960s, combined photographic collage and scribbling to create expressive figurative portrait. Garbuz began to exhibit his paintings in 1967. Since then, his works have been featured in dozens of one-man shows and group exhibitions in Israel and around the world.
In the 1970s, his work integrated influences of American Pop Art with Israeli social criticism. Garbuz employed a variety of media, from installations to artist's books which often contained dimensions of political reflection and self-parody. From 1974-1986, he created video art using techniques similar to collage, and wrote texts in the same style. Later, he returned to more traditional painting and created collages referencing the history of Israeli art.
His paintings are featured in important private and public collections in Israel and abroad. Garbuz also teaches painting. From 1973-2009, he taught at Hamidrasha Art School, which he headed starting in 1997. He has also taught at the Avni Institute, at Tel-Hai Academic College, and at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem.
Among his many pursuits, he lectures on art around Israel and writes about art as an editor of the satirical Davar Aher supplement. He is also an editor of the “Intimate Report” television program on culture, and edits and presents programs and columns on culture and society on radio, television, and the press, including a personal editorial he delivers on the Tik Tikshoret program on Israel Educational Television.
