Jan Rauchwerger was born in Turkmenistan in 1942.
He served in the Soviet Army for three years until 1964. In 1965 Jan Rauchwerger began studying painting with Russian artist Vladimir Weisberg, which began a dialogue that continued till Mr. Weisberg’s death in 1985.
Jan Rauchwerger immigrated to Israel in 1973. In the 1970s, Rauchwerger taught art at the Avni School of Art in Tel Aviv. In the 1980s, he taught at The High School of Painting in Tel Aviv as well as at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem.
Stylistically his artwork is a modern take on realism and he works in multiple mediums, including oils, watercolor, pastel and pencil. Often his subject matter consists of the model in the studio but he also paints the everyday including houses and interiors, nudes, still lifes and domesticated animals. His sense of color and the sensitivity to his subject matter are the strengths of his work. At first glance, his works seem benign, accessible and simple; however after further scrutiny they reveal an academic depth and complexity.
Jan Rauchwerger’s work has been exhibited in many museums and galleries across Israel and abroad. He had a retrospective in 2004, Shades of Feeling, at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and a solo show in 2008 at the Tel-Aviv museum.

Born December 15 to Sonia and Mordechai Reichwarger (years later, after his arrival in Israel, Jan would change his surname to Rauchwerger). Place of birth: Bairam Ali, Turkmenistan, to which the family was evacuated from Kharkov, Ukraine, because of the war

After the Ukraine is liberated from German occupation, the family moves back, settling in the new capital, Kiev
1954-1961
Studies in T. H. Shevchenko High School of Art, adjoining the Kiev Academy of Art. Becomes an admirer of El Greco and of the Impressionists

Serves in the Soviet Army, first in Kiev and later in the Western Ukraine, near Lvov
